About this Calculator

Pressure is easier to understand when you stop thinking of it as just another formula. Look at a nail, for example. Its pointed end can push into wood much more easily than the flat head because the same force is concentrated over a much smaller area. That everyday observation is a good way to start understanding pressure.

The basic formula is Pressure = Force ÷ Area. Suppose you push a box with a force of 100 N over an area of 5 m². The pressure is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 Pa. Here, Pa means pascal, the standard unit of pressure. Now keep the force at 100 N but reduce the area to 2 m². The pressure becomes 100 ÷ 2 = 50 Pa.

Notice what happened? The force didn't change at all. Only the area became smaller, and the pressure increased. This is why a sharp knife can cut more easily than a blunt one. The cutting edge has a much smaller contact area, so the force is concentrated over that smaller space.

A Class 8 Pressure Calculator can be useful while practicing these kinds of questions. Try solving a problem yourself first. For example, if the force is 60 N and the area is 3 m², you should get 20 Pa. Entering those same values into the calculator gives you a quick way to check your work.

Pressure also appears in less obvious places. Wide school-bag straps are more comfortable than very thin straps because they spread the force over a larger area. Similarly, the broad tyres of some vehicles help distribute their weight over the ground.

The calculator is useful, but don't let the final number be the only thing you look at. Ask yourself what happened when the force or area changed. Once that relationship starts making sense, pressure questions become much less intimidating.
