About this Calculator

Think about your journey to school. Some days you reach quickly, while on other days the same journey seems to take forever. Speed helps us describe how much distance someone or something covers in a certain amount of time. It is a simple idea, and once you understand the formula, most basic speed questions become easier to solve.

The formula is Speed = Distance ÷ Time. Suppose a student rides a bicycle for 12 kilometres in 2 hours. To find the average speed, divide 12 by 2. The answer is 6 km/h. This means the student covered an average of 6 kilometres every hour.

Let's try another example. A bus travels 150 kilometres in 3 hours. Its average speed is 150 ÷ 3 = 50 km/h. Now imagine the bus covers the same distance in 5 hours instead. Its average speed becomes 150 ÷ 5 = 30 km/h. The distance hasn't changed, but the longer journey time means a lower average speed.

A Class 8 Speed Calculator can help you check examples like these while studying. Enter the distance and time, then compare the result with the answer you worked out in your notebook. Remember to use compatible units. For example, if distance is measured in metres and time in seconds, the answer will be in metres per second (m/s). If you use kilometres and hours, the answer will be in kilometres per hour (km/h).

You can also rearrange the formula when a question asks for distance or time instead of speed. For example, travelling at 40 km/h for 2 hours gives a distance of 40 × 2 = 80 kilometres.

Don't worry if these calculations take a little practice. Start with small numbers, write down the formula, and substitute the values carefully. Use the calculator to check your answers, but try to understand each step too. Before long, speed questions will feel much more manageable.
