About this Calculator

Knowing the distance and speed of a journey doesn't always mean the answer is obvious. If someone asks how long it will take to travel 120 kilometres at a particular speed, you need to connect those two numbers first. That's where the time formula comes in handy. For Class 8 problems, Time (t) = Distance (d) / Speed (S).

Take a simple example. A car travels 120 km at a speed of 40 km/h. To find the time, divide the distance by the speed: 120 ÷ 40 = 3 hours. So, the journey would take 3 hours if the car maintained that speed throughout.

Here's another one. A cyclist needs to cover 30 km and travels at an average speed of 10 km/h. The time is 30 ÷ 10 = 3 hours. Now imagine the cyclist increases the speed to 15 km/h. The same 30 km journey would take 30 ÷ 15 = 2 hours. The distance stayed the same, but the higher speed reduced the travel time.

A Class 8 Time Calculator can be useful for checking these calculations. Try solving the question on paper first, then enter the distance and speed into the tool. If the calculator gives a different result, check whether you used the same units and formula.

Units are particularly important. If distance is given in kilometres and speed in kilometres per hour, the answer will be in hours. For example, 90 km ÷ 30 km/h = 3 hours. If the units don't match, convert them before calculating.

The formula becomes easier once you connect it to real situations. Think about travelling to school, riding a bicycle, taking a train, or walking somewhere nearby. Instead of memorising t = d ÷ S without context, ask yourself: “How far am I going, and how quickly am I moving?” That simple question often makes the calculation much easier to understand.
